Discover the Val di Noto: a baroque heritage in the heart of Sicily

If you’re planning a holiday in Sicily, you have to include a tour of the Val di Noto, a Baroque pearl in south-east Sicily. The region is home to a treasure of great historical and architectural value, so much so that in 2002, Unesco decided to list eight late-Baroque cities as a World Heritage Site: Noto, Ragusa, Scicli, Modica, Caltagirone, Palazzolo Acreide, Catania and Militello in Val di Catania.

In ancient times the area was one of the administrative districts of the Kingdom of Sicily. Although they now belong to different provinces, namely Ragusa, Syracuse and Catania, they are known as the Baroque cities of the Val di Noto because they share the same Baroque style of art and architecture. This was the main artistic movement that flourished during the reconstruction following the devastating earthquake of 1693, which razed much of eastern Sicily to the ground. Although the Arab part was completely destroyed, unlike western Sicily which still has Arab remains, it is perhaps thanks to that earthquake that we can today enjoy the fascinating late-Baroque churches and sumptuous noblemen’s houses in Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Scicli and Noto.

Furthermore, a visit to the Val di Noto would be incomplete without immersing yourself in its pristine natural environment, including marine and river nature reserves, beaches and coasts with crystal-clear waters, quarries, remains of ancient settlements in the woods and marvellous Mediterranean landscapes. An enchanted land waiting to be explored by lovers of trekking and excursions. Don’t miss the beautiful Vendicari nature reserve along Sicily’s south-east coast.
