From the souvenir shops of Piano Provenzana take the route made by the minibuses that go to the summit craters. Follow the direction to Monte Nero turning right. Once reached Monte Nero, take the way that goes round the mountain from the left and reach the refuge Timpa Rossa, crossing a dense beech forest. This is a free entrance wooden refuge equipped with a well with non-drinking water, benches and tables. For those who want to stay overnight, the refuge can host until 10 people but there are no beds, so it is necessary to have a sleeping bag. Inside the refuge there is a wood stove. To come back from Timpa Rossa take the main path that goes down through the wood until a fork and here turn right. Once out of the woods, go up the lava field on the left of Monte Nero.
