It is located on the ground floor of a building that overlooks a stepped square from which the historical path that joins the two historic centers of Ragusa begins, through a wide staircase that crosses Baroque palaces, churches and stately monuments.
It is ubicated in Corso Mazzini, a panoramic road that goes from upper Ragusa to the heart of lower Ragusa (Ibla), offering suggestive panoramic views.
The district of Santa Maria delle Scale is one of the oldest in Ragusa and preserves the authentic flavor of the Sicilian nature of the place: alleys, huts and narrow streets in white stone, colored by geraniums and prickly pears, overlook the valley and offer visitors a unique view of Ragusa Ibla.
It is 25 km from the sandy beaches In Marina di Ragusa and 28 km from "Pio La Torre" airport in Comiso.
The history and the neighborhood
The stylistic choices characterizing the apartment and its name are a tribute to the Sicilian nature of the location and the name "raffo" refers to the Arab quarter of Ragusa Ibla where the accommodation is located, so called because it is in a territory with a terrace configuration, precisely called "raffo".
The building that now houses Raffo apartment is one of the first houses built in Ragusa in the aftermath of the 1693 earthquake: it destroyed a large part of the Val di Noto and marked the birth of the Iblean Baroque style. Raffo stands on a stepped square, a meeting place for liturgical and social events and, more recently, it was also a film set: the director Giuseppe Tornatore, in the nineties, chose it as the set of the film "Man of the stars", numerous television commercials and many scenes from Inspector Montalbano's series had place here. Raffo and its interiors were also the set of the last episode of the series inspired by the stories of Andrea Camilleri, "The method Catalanotti ").
In this square, until a few decades ago, all the inhabitants of the neighborhood gathered to recite the rosary, from the most destitute and modest populace, to the noble, the so-called gentleman "with 7 hats". Not far from the district, along stairways and winding streets, stands the Arab quarter of San Paolo, known as "RAFFO" for its characteristic terrace structure. In 1100, Roger the Norman chose this neighborhood as the site for a new Cistercian monastery which about two centuries later was transformed into a church, called Santa Maria delle Scale. The strategic position of the latter made it, in the aftermath of the post-earthquake reconstruction, a geographical demarcation point between the upper Ragusa, of the so-called "sangiovannari" (devotees of San Giovanni, patron saint of the "new" city) and the lower Ragusa of the so-called “sangiorgiari” (devotees of San Giorgio, patron saint of Ragusa Ibla). It is said that right here, real sentinels, shouting "Cu Viva", were stationed to check that no "foreigner" dared to cross the borders of their territory. The interiors and the architectural and design criteria of the accommodation represent as many tales: the stories of an eclectic family that are intertwined with those of a place full of suggestions, in an aesthetic hybridized between the Iblei Mount area and Milan and between two generations.
